Gorey Toastmasters host Area Tall Tales Contest
The Ashdown Park played host to the Area Final of the Tall Tales Contest on 1st February. The night was hosted by ourselves, Gorey Toastmasters Club, and we were joined by members from the Wexford and Enniscorthy Clubs. There were 5 fantastic Speeches on the night from members of all three Clubs.
A Tall Tale is a short 3 to 5 minute speech with a twist in the tale. Subjects covered on the night ranged from the serial killing of Rice Krispies to dreams of winning the Grand National to the invention of the Masai Ferguson tractor (that’s what she said !). The speakers entered into the spirit of the contest in style and a very good night was had by all.
When a contest is held there has to be a winner and all of the contestants represented their Clubs in style. Jim Cowman from Wexford came first with an enthralling speech of UFO‘s meeting toastmasters. Matty Behan representing Gorey had us all in stitches having ‘killed’ a rice krispie or two. Noel Browne from Enniscorthy came third with an entertaining trip to the Grand National where he was ably assisted by none other than HRH The Queen !
“Speaking in public is fun and there was plenty of fun in abundance at the meeting” said Club President Jack Lennox. Area Governor Brendan Doherty congratulated all of the contestants on a very enjoyable evening and complimented all three Clubs on their success in the Competition. “There was something for everyone at the meeting tonight” commented Brendan.
Our photo shows the winner Jim Cowman being congratulated by Club President, Jack Lennox. Also in the picture, Area Governor, Brendan Doherty, Matty Behan 2nd place and Noel Browne, 3rd place.

Why do people join Toastmasters is one of the most frequently asked questions we get. When we ask this of our members the answer we often receive back is “it helps me in my job”. Often people forget that it can be not what you say but how you say it that is important. Job Interviews and presentations at work are prime examples of this. In interviews it is important to make a good first impression and in the current climate it can be important when making presentations at work to put a ‘positive’ spin on the message being imparted.
Public speaking is probably something that most of us would rather not think about. But it is actually something we see or do nearly every day. It is something everyone has to do and many people do it seemingly without thinking. The usual occasions where we use public speaking would be: at mass / family functions / work / to name but a few. This is where Toastmasters can help.
Guests are welcome at every toastmaster meeting – FREE of charge. Gorey Toastmasters meet on the 1st and third Wednesdays of each month. Enniscorthy Toastmasters meet on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month. Wexford Toastmasters meet in White's Hotel on the 2nd and 4th Thursday each month. Together we make up Area 50 of Toastmasters International.

The environment is friendly and supportive, and the self-paced program allows you to build confidence with each speaking assignment. And you’ll love the applause!
